Hi everyone, I hope you are looking forward to the third Clonakilty ‘Organic’ Arts Festival. Why Organic? Well a lot of festivals, as good as they are, don’t go far enough in promoting the talent in their local areas. Clonakilty Arts Festival is ‘Organic’ because we want to grow, nurture and show case the wonderful talent we have in West Cork. As our mission statement says, ‘We want to provide a stage and creative space to grow local talent’ Don’t worry, it’s far from an exclusive ‘West Cork Festival’. We feature music workshops from Indonesian culture in Kilgariffe COI on Sunday with ‘The Gamelan’, Playwright Colette Forde, brings her play ‘Innit’ to Clonakilty and we have a plethora of entries from many Artists far and wide who will be exhibiting in six galleries across the town, including internationally renowned Jim Fitzpatrick, who’s exhibition will feature in the Michael Collins House museum on Emmets Square. And all events are FREE!
Clonakilty born and bred, and the festival patron Dave Lordan, will be attending once again. He plans on sharing an eBook anthology of new Irish poetry and on Friday afternoon will being doing a ‘creativity workshop and a talk on the new wave of literary video in O’Donovans Hotel. This year, the Clonakilty Street Carnival is running on the Saturday of the Arts festival, so and foodies will be treated to an array of dishes, surrounded by music, the arts and entertainment. Check out our wonderful programme to see the array of genres and mix of people who are contributing to this years festival. Be sure to check out the towns internet radio station at www.clonlineradio.com to listen into interviews and events from the festival and more.
A big thank you must go to all our host venues, so be sure to enjoy a bite to eat a few drinks and check out what the town has to offer. Thank you also to De Barras and Shanleys for hosting our opening and closing events. Finally a special thanks to the Cork County Council for their continued support and to the O’Neill family of Fernhill House Hotel as the festival’s main Sponsor.
Finally a word for this years guest of honour, Noreen Minihan.
Noreen, has been a wonderful supporter of all genres of art and performance in Clonakilty and has graced the stage herself as an actor, poet and raconteur over the decades. Not only that, she probably taught half the town in her time as a teacher.
So welcome everyone, come on in and enjoy!
